As you probably already know, I’m not just a photographer. I’m a wife to my awesome husband, a mom to the cutest (almost) three year old little boy, a licensed nurse, and a Senior Consultant for Jamberry nails. I have lots of interests and have always struggled with what I wanted to “be” when I grew up. But above all else, I always knew I wanted to be a mom. So when our son was born, I knew I wanted to be at home with him.
The day I went back from maternity leave, I gave a notice and worked for the next couple of weeks. I worked in a Hematology/Oncology practice, and all of my patients were so supportive and happy for me. They encouraged me by telling me that I would never regret the decision to spend this time with him. And boy were they right! I have never regretted a single second of it, but there have been times of financial stress and that has pushed me to build my business(es) and become a work-at-home mom (or WAHM), so that I can help support our family and take some of the stress off of my husband.
I was recently interviewed by Suzy Fielders, for an article about being a WAHM. You can check out that article over at Triad Moms on Main. There are some great tips in that article, and here are a few of my other tips:
Try to find your own balance. It can be difficult to shut the computer off and walk away, but sometimes you have to do it. And likewise, the laundry still needs to be done, or your family will go naked. (If I’m working in the office, I can almost guarantee there’s a load of laundry washing!) Try to work out a schedule that works with your family’s life and stick to it. And don’t feel like you have to do everything yourself. Your family can help with things like laundry, or dishes and it’s never to early to get your kids to help out around the house. (My son has been “helping” with laundry since he started walking, and is also responsible for cleaning up his own toys.) What works for me won’t necessarily be ideal for someone else, so find a routine that fits!
- Stay organized. I would be lost without my paper planner! I use it to schedule doctor appointments, school and church events, volunteer projects and even write out my to-do lists for the week. I also try to break down my to-do lists into bite-sized chunks for each day so that I don’t get overwhelmed. Again, this may not be for everyone. You may prefer an electronic calendar, and that’s great too! The point is to have everything in one place so you don’t have to chase down information when you need it.
I certainly don’t have all of the answers when it comes to balancing it all. In fact, as I sit here and type this, I’m wearing yesterday’s dirty jeans and there’s a sink full of dishes that need to be washed. Some days I think, “I’ve really got this under control!” Other days, I feel like I’m just treading water. And that’s ok. I just keep on moving and try to remember that my son is the reason I’m doing this. He is the most important thing.
Do you have any tips for WAHMs? Anyone else have a sink full of dirty dishes?
Off to clean my house. 😉
Hey, hey! I am back to share more exciting news with you!!
I am hosting a model call for newborns born during the month of March. Think your baby is the cutest on the block and has what it takes? Check out some of the newborn cuties I photographed last year:
These sessions will take place in-studio when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. We will focus on 1 to 2 poses during our 1 hour session, so these sessions will be relaxed and very laid back. Just as with all of my newborn clients we will chat prior to the session during a brief, pre-session consultation so that I can get a feel for your color preferences. (I will provide all props used during the sessions.) Because these images will be featured on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social media outlets, as well as our newletter, in printed materials and right here on the blog, parents will need to sign a model release.
Julie Uhl Photography newborn models will receive their session fee at no charge, and as a thank you for your time and sharing your precious baby with me, you will receive between 3 and 5 web-ready digital images, and you will have the opportunity to purchase prints, products and high resolution digitals at an awesome discount!
Email me (JulieUhlPhotography@gmail.com) or reach me via the contact form here on my site to be considered for this model call. Please include a bit about yourself, along with a photo of you with your bundle of joy (if they haven’t arrived yet, just a family snapshot works!), their name, gender and birth date (or estimated due date).
Have additional questions I haven’t answered here? Please feel free to email me or shoot me a message via the contact form!
Over the last year or so, I’ve come to really love photographing high school seniors (and a few college grads too!). I love the excitement of celebrating accomplishment and planning for the adventures to come, all while capturing their personalities and interests. Check out a few of my faves from last year:
Since warm weather is on its way, I was thinking we should celebrate the Class of 2015 with a Senior portrait session special.
Here are the details:
Book your Senior’s portrait session this month and receive a 30 minute mini session, on location with 5 digital images for only $150!
These sessions are only available on weekdays, and must be booked during the month of March but may take place during March or April 2015.
Receive a discount on prints and other products!
AND, if you refer a friend and they also book a session, you can take $10 off of your session fee!
So what do you guys think? Is this an awesome deal or what? I can’t wait to meet some of our awesome local seniors and hear all about your plans for the future!

Sometimes I look at my husband and son playing and spending time together, and think “I don’t ever want to forget these moments.” And for me, it makes me fall even more in love with them both. So, I’ve decided to start capturing those sweet moments for myself. This is the reason I started doing photography in the first place, and I’ve been a slacker when it comes to capturing the day to day happenings in our own lives since starting this business. I have enjoyed capturing these moments so much that, after a lot of consideration, I’ve decided to offer Family and Child Lifestyle Sessions to my awesome clients!!
So, are you ready for the details?! Here we go!
Prior to your session, we’ll have a consultation to plan everything and discuss what kind of moments you want captured. We can plan activities such as reading together, playing board games, cooking or even just hanging out! The day of your session, I’ll spend 90-120 minutes with you photographing those real laughs, snuggles and smiles. These sessions are super laid back so we’ll take our time and allow you to really enjoy yourself. After your session, you will receive 15-20 digital files sent directly to you within two weeks, and you’ll even have the option to print them up to an 8×10 size. (And there’s always the option to purchase wall portraits, albums, etc.)
The cost for these sessions will be $600, BUT through February 28th, you can book yours for only $400!
So are you as excited about this as I am?!
Still have questions I haven’t answered here? Shoot me an email, or contact me through the “contact” tab up top.
